What is an investment account?
In Germany, a Depot (or Depotkonto) is a specialized bank account used exclusively for holding and trading securities, such as stocks, ETFs, and bonds. Think of it as a “digital safe” for your investments. While a regular checking account (Girokonto) holds your cash for daily spending, the Depot holds your financial assets.
Investing in Germany as an expat comes with several unique features and advantages that you should understand:
Order Fees (Ordergebühren): The cost you pay each time you buy or sell.
Management Fees (Depotgebühren): Most modern brokers now offer this for €0.
Savings Plans (Sparplan): A very German concept where you automatically invest a fixed amount (e.g., €50) every month into an ETF.
Tax Handling: German brokers automatically withhold the capital gains tax (Abgeltungsteuer), saving you from a massive headache during tax season.
As an investor in Germany, you are entitled to a tax-free allowance on investment gains (currently €1,000 per year for individuals and €2,000 per year for married couples). You can submit a Freistellungsauftrag (exemption order) directly through your broker’s app. This tells the broker not to withhold taxes until your total profit for the year exceeds this limit—putting more money back into your pocket immediately.

Long story short:
With PreFinEx's help and thorough guidance, I was able to switch from public to private health insurance painlessly!
Long story long 😊:
I booked a free 30-minute meeting, and I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly and responsive Axel was. I wanted to cover three topics—insurance, pension, and investments—and I was hoping at least one of them would be addressed. To my surprise, Axel was able to answer all my questions, and by the end of the meeting, I had the full picture!
"This is your 30 minutes—feel free to ask!"
This one sentence made it clear to me that I wanted to work with them. Axel's professionalism and openness stood out, and I couldn't be happier with my decision.
Just book a free meeting—you won’t regret it!
I'm looking forward to building a lasting business relationship with them. It's been such a great start.
Axel and Pascal were a pleasure to work with. I'd highly recommend you talk to them. Even if you already have your insurances, you could revisit your current situation and work on making them better and more efficient. The way he speaks clearly shows he is here to help.
Wishing you all the very best and keep those videos coming!
